FAQs

Teaching FAQs

Am I too old to have lessons?

Not at all! I have taught pupils in their 70s and older.

What is the youngest age you teach?

I have taught children as young as 5 years of age but I would not start lessons with a child who was younger than this.

Do I have to do exams?
There’s no pressure to sit exams, but for those who do wish to sit an exam it is a great way to measure your progress. I currently enter pupils for a range of ABRSM exams, including both classical and jazz options and the online Performance Grades. I also help many of my pupils towards attaining ABRSM Music Theory exams, especially at Grade 5 level, as this is a prerequisite for sitting Grades 6 and above in the practical and performance grades.

Which days do you teach?

I currently teach on all days of the week including Sundays (subject to availability)

Do you teach during the daytime?
Yes, I teach during the day, after-school and evenings.

Where are you based?
I teach from my home-based studio in Wetherby West Yorkshire. Check out my Contact page for details on how to find me.

Do you teach outside of term times?
Yes, If you wish to have lessons outside of school term times that can be arranged

How do I pay for lessons?
Please see my Prices and Terms and Conditions page for more details.

I don’t have a piano. Can I still have lessons?

You can begin without a piano if you’re visiting me for the lessons, but you will need an instrument soon after starting in order to practice at home and make progress. If you’re on a budget you can consider purchasing a digital instrument as opposed to an acoustic piano. Whatever option you decide upon, your instrument should have weighted keys and be touch sensitive. I’m happy to offer advice on this, and would also recommend you visit a piano retailer. You can find a link for this on my Resources page.

Performance FAQs

How can I book you and your band for a function?
Please contact me via the Contact page or phone me on 07792 549159 and leave me your details and a message and I will get back to you.

How do I pay for your service as a performing musician?

I accept payment by cash or bank transfer, made prior to the performance. In the case of private bookings (eg for weddings or private parties), I usually ask for a deposit to secure my services at the time of booking.

What kind of events do you play?

I regularly perform for all types of private events throughout the year. These include wedding ceremonies and receptions, birthdays, anniversaries and funerals. Alongside this, I also play live in restaurants, hotels, art centres, and other venues open to members of the public.
Also please see my Live Music, Solo Piano, with Singer,  Trio,  Soulful Days,  Projects, Soul Jazz Collective and Quartet pages. For Weddings see Weddings Page

How much do you charge to perform?

My fee for a live performance is variable and dependent on a number of factors. These include the size of the band you wish to hire, the duration of performance(s), and travel costs/proximity of the performance location, etc. I can offer a range of live music options, and am happy to provide advice regarding the best choice depending on a client’s budget, and the context in which they would like me to perform.

Are you insured?

Yes, I have Public Liability Insurance and all the electrical equipment that I use for live performances is PAT tested.
